Independent Education Appeals Panel Member

West Berkshire Council is looking for volunteers to sit on their Independent Education Appeals Panel.

The Panel hears and determines appeals submitted by parents or guardians, as a result of being refused a place for their children at their preferred school, or due to their child being excluded from school.

Hearings take place all year round between the hours of 9am and 5pm, Monday to Friday, at Shaw House in Newbury or Online. The majority of appeals are heard between May and July where you may be expected to do a day or two a week. In quieter periods the role may only require a few hours a month and you are free to accept or refuse any panel dates offered to you.

You will be paid £35 per Panel meeting and full training will be provided to ensure you are fully equipped to carry out the role successfully. A Clerk is always available to give legal and procedural advice.

Panels are made up of ‘Lay’ and ‘Education’ members, we are looking for both. We would welcome applications from:

Lay members:

People that have not worked in any school in any paid capacity. A lay member can also be someone that is, or has been, a school governor or has worked, or continues to work, in a school as a volunteer.

Education members:

  • School governors
  • Head teachers or former head teachers
  • Deputy head teachers or former deputy head teachers
  • Teachers or former teachers
  • Support staff or former support staff
  • Parents with children at school

Please note that education members cannot be currently employed by schools within West Berkshire.

No formal qualifications are required but you must be:

  • Aged 18 or over
  • Available during weekdays (Panel members may be asked to sit for a morning or full day)
  • Willing to undertake training.

Please email to request an application form.

If you would like to discuss the role, please call Ben Ryan on 01635 503973.
